Jim Woster reminds listeners during this week’s Corn Comments segment that family owned and operated farms and ranches make up 98% of the state’s producers of food, feed, fuel and fiber. More than 2,500 of those farms have remained in the same family for more than 100 years.
The latest USDA ag census data showed that South Dakota has increased its number of farms since 2007. On average those farms have gotten smaller and the average age of South Dakota farmers remained the same. For more on the South Dakota’s ag census results, click here.
